{postseason}

Strike, clutch, wind-up,
ball, infield outfield,
warning-track, wall—

Nothing so simple, really,
standing room only,
it’s what we discussed:

87, not 88, a final win and yet
a loss. We need another bat,
a decent response

to something that was months
in the making, regret defeated
in the face of too many

places where it could
have gone wrong—
1-6-3, 3-6-4, bunt, balk,

error, walk, a path diverged
again and again—
or emerged, if you’d like

to think of it like that,
discounting the power
of what never was—

Love the short, punchy stanzas, metaphor, feeling. btw, when I post my poetry, everything comes out in the same spacing and my stanza breaks totally disappear. I’m cutting and pasting a lot of them from poems directly from computer or flash drive. Do you know why the heck my spacing is off? Your posts are just right in the format. How do you manage that? Thanks.

Thanks! Either I write and format it in the new post prompt, or I go back and fix everything if I’ve pasted it from word. I figure if I’m putting the line breaks in the same place consistently, it’s a good sign? 🙂

As a Yankees fan, I would add a “no” before the “postseason”… but it was like winning the World Series to see Jeter get that walk-off hit v the Orioles. Now at least I can watch the post-season knowing there’s a good chance to see some new teams in the World Series.

And, uh, great poem. As always.

Well. I still remember 1995. Last year for Donnie Baseball and the Mariners knocked the Yankees out of the postseason. So by 2001 it was just time for some payback.

Heh heh I remember 1995, too, and crying along with Joey Cora… given your 27 World Series titles, my sympathy is still quite limited!
