A leave-taking
still

I’ll see
these yellow doors

again but it won’t
be this me

hardly a loss
so why

this longing
for lasting?

.

All the seeds
we planted

are coming up
distinctive

seed leaves
true to type

and rain
this weekend–

progress
as planned

.

Is this the way
it goes for blossoms

that fall off
of nascent fruits

false starts
that only thought

they were
the thing

.

Or is this just
more structure

xylem and phloem
just how much

preparation
is required

before something
can happen?

.

Oh harbingers
are tricky–

to know
but not know what

.

and much more
so now

with such a wilted faith
in when

My wife and I planted three seeds and watched them grow. They rooted well, strong, their roots firm in the earth and yet they have flowers and yearn for the sun and light. Deep in the soil where the earth natures them and reaching for the sun during the day and the stars at night for guidance.

growing plants from seed is so gratifying, or inspiring…that a whole garden can come from just a handful of dry seeds still amazes me year after year

I love “so why / this longing / for lasting?” That, and just plain the idea of narrative at all, are at the heart of so much that is troubling. The harbinger does not know it is the harbinger. They were the thing and not the harbinger at their moment. In the process of things, they were more than signs to be read.
