[Albedo]*
No stars, but the city lights
over-compensate at night–
this is still the world
of the living.
All these towers are lit up
in all sorts of hues,
incandescent warmth, white
and cool blues, as more
diffuse clouds come in over
the bay, and on their belly,
a feeble pink reflection–
the sky between is void,
matte and colorless,
an unanswered question,
a voice left hanging–
just think of a photon
traveling across the dark,
massless, unlike anything
we know, what a gift–
what a gift to receive,
and to give, like love,
in whatever capacity
we are able.
The streetlamp illuminates
the gingko tree, bathes it
in gold, and the leaves
return the favor, yellow
begetting the exact same yellow–
something rare, and simple,
and quietly notable.
*Just learned this word tonight! It means, roughly, the percentage of light reflected by a surface that received it. If you are fond of obscure words and not already following Sesquiotica, you should remedy that now.
Wonderful poem–love the imagery!! But, your new word, albedo–your poem is all about light, and didn’t use your new word. 😦 I’m never without my thesaurus (online) when I write because I love to pull out obscure words for more ordinary things–their sound, even if the reader doesn’t know the meaning, often contributes to the depth of the imagery!!
Very much enjoy your work!

Thanks, Mike! And I think albedo is all about reflection… it might be in there after all 🙂

I haven’t visited in ages, but I’m glad I’ve had the time to do – your poetry is seriously the best stress-reliever out there!

I am glad you’ve had time, too! Writing it is pretty good stress relief, I’m glad the effect of reading it is similar 🙂

LOVE this bit so much. The use of the ‘u’ sounds; so good!

I always enjoy the unique words you incorporate into your poems. Photon. Ginko. Albedo. The vocabulary alone gives the poems a fresh taste.

Thank you! I am admittedly obsessed with Gingko, the word and the actual tree are both so striking…

Wonderful. And thanks for telling about Sesquiotica. I had never heard of it before. Off to check it out.
